"THE '49 MAJOR"

Updated: Feb 20, 2021

While I've always like the Hiss of a naptha gas burner running whether it be a lantern or cook stove.

It was a late summer day 2020 when I was flipping through the ads on the local buy and sell site when I came across a neat looking lantern, that claimed it was Manufactured in 1949.

So I was interested & I messaged the seller and agreed to meet up.

The old jewel turned out to be a 236 Major from 01/49, and in great condition minus the need for a Globe.

So it turned out The Ol' '49 needed a bit more then a Globe (which aren't readily available at the local store)

I needed a generator as the original asbestos line one was well clogged, I was extremely lucky early in my search to come across a contact in Manitoba, Canada.

So I reached out to Warren Coughlin at Coughlin's Repairs (1 204-725-0903), absolutely great guy to deal with, reasonably priced and fast shipping, I highly recommend him if you need anything Coleman related parts or service!

After a week or so I had all the parts needed to bring this relic back to life!

Fresh fuel, a new generator a crystal clear globe and a few pumps on the tank , and this 236 Major lit perfectly and ran flawless!

It now is a staple in our Cabela's Alaknak Outfitters tent giving us 500 candlepower and enough light to do whatever it is that you need within camp.

Since then it has created a bit of an obsession for these 236 lanterns I now own four, one of which manufactured 6\66 (above left) has never been lit, and sits on my mantel still with tag attached, and will continue to sit unused which almost seems a shame in itself!
