Reach Out with - inReach

It was a cold wet October Day with a slight chilly North wind on the back of my Neck.

This was a typical day in the Life of a Moose Guide in Newfoundland's rugged interior at this time of year.

Being in a Spike Camp for the past 5 weeks with limited connection to the outside world other than a weather update from the Bush Pilot once a week, for the next day or so, to an occasional phone call home with a satellite phone (and we all know how well those have worked over the years...sadly).

As my client and I sat on the side of that hill that morning waiting to hear a distant subtle grunt on an answering Bull Moose over the crisp air swerving around us.

I couldn't help but think what everyone else was doing in the other camps, back home or if this miserable weather was ever going to break...

As I prepared our daily boil up at lunch time I couldn't help but notice my client appeared to be attempting to send a message from his phone, intrigued I asked what he was doing...

He replied texting my wife, slightly confused yet humored, I replied

"Skipper you don't have no service here!"

Reaching down lifting up what I thought was his GPS he informed me that with his inReach satellite communicator he had service everywhere!

WHAT?

Yes he replied, " this device connects to satellite which connects via Bluetooth to my smartphone... I can text, check weather updates I can send my location and everything else a GPS does it's a great device, I've been using one for the last year now."

I immediately jumped up needing to see how this actually worked and how fast the replies were and how accurate it may be for the unpredictable weather in the North Atlantic was this device actually decent for our area which is typically left out in most American mapping and devices?

After seeing how quickly a text message reply came back from his wife I needed to see the weather section of this new wonderful device that I had no idea existed.

Over the course of the next couple of days we observed weather predictions from iridium weather to our real time conditions in our location and the conclusion was fairly outstanding.

I think it's safe to say I wasn't very long before I was proud owner of an inReach device myself.

Anyone who is an avid outdoors person spending any amount of time in remote areas where cell service is not obtainable these devices are extremely useful include potentially save your life or someone else's life in the field.

With each membership package there is an included SOS feature enabled on your device if unfortunate situations may arise help is only the push of a button away, and I must be honest, as a guide in the backcountry this certainly helps put some worry at Bay.
